Overview
Registered in 2009, 'Zeppelin' is a medium-sized hosta derived from *Hosta* 'Creme de Menthe' as seed parent and the species hybrid (*H. kikutii* var. *leuconata* × *H. hypoleuca*) as pollen parent. Its most distinctive feature is the heavy glaucous bloom present on both leaf surfaces, giving the blue-green foliage a muted, powdery appearance.
In the Garden
'Zeppelin' forms a slow-growing, mound-shaped clump reaching approximately 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 50 inches (127 cm) in diameter at maturity. The leaves are ovate with cordate bases, lightly folded and wavy, measuring 9 inches (22.9 cm) long by 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide with 12 to 13 vein pairs. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed border plantings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most blue-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
