Overview
Registered in 1989 by H. A. Zager and P. Ruh, 'Zager Giant Puckered' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves that bear a glaucous bloom, combined with puckered, undulating margins that give the foliage a textured, ruffled appearance.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact, rounded clump reaching approximately 26 inches (66 cm) in diameter and 17 inches (43 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green coloration remains most pronounced. The 9-inch-long by 7-inch-wide leaves, with 14 vein pairs, create a substantial but not oversized presence, making it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a woodland garden. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or astilbes complement its cool tones.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
