H. ‘You’re So Vein’

Overview

Registered in 2012, this small hosta cultivar was hybridized from seedling lines PDN 01-086 and BME. ‘You’re So Vein’ is visually distinctive for its unusually prominent dark green leaf veins set against a lighter green leaf surface, combined with thick, nearly round leaves that have a cordate (heart-shaped) base.

In the Garden

‘You’re So Vein’ forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its small size makes it well suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Companion plants might include small ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves offer some resistance to slugs and deer, though monitoring is still advisable in high-pressure areas.
