Overview
Registered in 2003 as a sport of an unnamed parent, *Hosta* 'Xela' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its stable, season-long color contrast of medium green leaves with greenish-yellow margins. The broadly ovate, moderately corrugated leaves measure 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide, with 9 to 11 vein pairs and margins 0.25 to 0.5 inches (0.6 to 1.3 cm) wide.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Xela' forms a dense, fast-growing mound 16 inches (40.6 cm) tall and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its moderate size and consistent variegation make it effective as a groundcover or border specimen, pairing well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials. The slightly rippled leaf margins and subtle gloss on the upper surface add textural interest without dominating the planting.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Xela' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and employ control measures if needed.
