Overview

Registered in 2002 by P. & J. Ruh as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sea Dream', 'Winfield Gold' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by green leaves with yellow-gold margins that become more intensely gold in full sun and shift to green-gold in shade. The ovate, lightly twisted leaves feature 9 to 10 prominent vein pairs, a dull upper surface, and a slightly shiny underside.

In the Garden

'Winfield Gold' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching approximately 18.5 inches (47 cm) in height and 50 inches (127 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, though the gold margin coloration is most pronounced with some direct sun. The dark green scapes rise 27 to 30.5 inches (68.6 to 77.5 cm) above the foliage. This small hosta is well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, and pairs effectively with fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
