Overview

Registered in 2013, 'Whybblue' is a selfed seedling of *Hosta* 'Yankee Blue' F1, notable for its lance-shaped, blue-green leaves with deeply wavy, lightly twisted margins and a pronounced glaucous bloom on both surfaces, the undersides appearing nearly white. This medium-sized cultivar forms a fast-growing, mound-like clump reaching 25 inches (63.5 cm) in height and 39 inches (99.1 cm) in diameter, with leaf blades 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide bearing 6 to 8 vein pairs.

In the Garden

'Whybblue' performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, and its moderate size suits mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. The blue-green foliage with near-white reverses pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or fine-textured grasses. Its fast growth rate and compact mound habit make it suitable for container culture in shaded settings.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor foliage regularly and apply controls as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
