Overview
Registered in 2010, *Hosta* 'Whizzer' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its tall scapes, which reach 52 to 54 inches (132–137 cm) in height. The leaves are broadly ovate with cordate bases, measuring 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, and feature medium green flat margins with a dull surface on both sides; the leaf center is not variegated in the typical sense, but the overall appearance is of a solid green, moderately flat blade with seven vein pairs.
In the Garden
'Whizzer' forms an upright clump 19 inches (48.3 cm) tall and 27 inches (68.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad green foliage. Its exceptionally tall scapes make it a candidate for the back of a mixed border or as a vertical accent in a woodland garden.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Whizzer' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
