Overview
Registered in 2009, *Hosta* 'Voluptuous Valerie' is a large, variegated cultivar of unknown parentage (pod parent *H.* 'Minuteman', pollen parent unknown). It is visually distinctive for its nearly round, deeply ribbed, dark green leaves with flat margins, a moderately cupped form, and a slightly shiny upper surface contrasting with a dull underside.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature size of 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large, heart-shaped leaves make it a suitable specimen for woodland borders or shaded beds, though its size precludes container culture.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
