Overview
Registered in 1999 by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Vilmoriniana' is a small, mound-forming cultivar of unknown parentage. Its variegated leaves feature light green, slightly rippled margins with a dull upper surface and a slightly shiny underside, distinguishing it from many small hostas with uniform leaf textures.
In the Garden
'Vilmoriniana' forms a compact mound 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) tall and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its small size makes it an excellent choice for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Pair with fine-textured ferns or small woodland perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Vilmoriniana' may be browsed by deer and is susceptible to slug damage, particularly on its dull-surfaced leaves.
