Overview
Registered in 1989 by J. & J. Wilkins, this medium-sized hosta cultivar resulted from a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Gold Regal'. 'Ultraviolet Light' is visually distinguished by its green leaves with broad, irregular yellow margins, a color pattern inherited from its parent, and its substantial clump dimensions.
In the Garden
'Ultraviolet Light' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for gold-margined hostas, where the yellow margins hold their color without scorching. At maturity, the clump reaches approximately 42 inches (107 cm) in diameter and 18 inches (46 cm) in height, with individual leaves 8 inches (20 cm) long and 5 inches (12 cm) wide. The scape height is recorded as 30 inches (76 cm), though some sources note variability. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad, variegated foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Ultraviolet Light' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
