H. ‘Ugly Duckling’

Overview

Registered in 1999 by Q&Z Nursery, this medium-sized sport of *Hosta* 'Gold Regal' produces greenish-yellow leaves with creamy white margins. The foliage is dull on top with tapered bases, and the plant forms a slow-growing mound.

'HUgly Duckling' reaches approximately 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 37 inches (94.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade. Its muted leaf coloration pairs well with darker-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. The plant’s compact habit and slow growth rate suit it for woodland gardens or shaded foundation plantings.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
