Overview

Registered in 2009, *Hosta* 'Transformer' is a giant sport of a streaked *Hosta* 'Blue Angel' notable for its dramatic seasonal color change. The leaves emerge with a creamy white center and dark green margins; beginning in mid-June, the center progressively turns green, becoming nearly indistinguishable from the margin color by mid-July.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches 28 inches (71 cm) in height and 54 inches (137 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its large, broadly ovate leaves (15 inches long, 11 inches wide) with cordate bases and slightly rippled margins create a substantial presence. The glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides adds textural interest. Suitable for mid-border or as a specimen plant in woodland gardens, it pairs well with ferns and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth resumes. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
