Overview
Registered in 1990 by W. & E. Lachman, this small hosta cultivar resulted from a cross between *H.* 'Lachman 81-8' (seed parent) and *H.* 'Halcyon' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its compact mound of dark green leaves with white margins, borne on scapes that reach up to 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height.
In the Garden
'Torchlight' forms a dense clump 14 inches (35.6 cm) tall and 24 inches (61.0 cm) wide, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging along pathways. Its small stature and white-margined foliage pair well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials in partial to full shade. The cultivar is also appropriate for container culture given its compact habit.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents may be necessary, as with most hostas.
