Overview
Registered in 2009 by D. Beilstein and M. Zilis, *Hosta* 'Topo Gigio' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from the pod parent *H.* 'Breeder's Choice' with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with golden yellow marginal streaks, a flat leaf margin, and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
'Topo Gigio' forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching approximately 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 25 inches (63.5 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact size makes it suitable for border fronts, rock gardens, or container plantings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
