Overview
Registered in 2002 by Paul Ruh, *Hosta* 'Tisch' is a large, upright cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its intensely blue-green, ovate leaves with slightly rippled margins, a lightly twisted and folded form, and a dull surface on both sides. The leaves bear 15 prominent vein pairs and measure 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) long by 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, forming a clump 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter and 13 inches (33.0 cm) tall. This cultivar has been noted as a frequent breeder, with many numbered types derived from it, and is considered representative of Ruh's home-originated selections.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Tisch' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-green cultivars, where its leaf color remains truest. Its large, upright habit and slow growth rate make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds, where it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. The plant's substantial leaf size and moderate waviness provide textural contrast without overwhelming smaller companions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor regularly and employ control measures as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
