Overview
Registered in 2020 as a sport of an unnamed parent by G. H. Alley, *Hosta* 'Thunderbolt' is a large cultivar distinguished by its bright yellow-green leaf centers framed by extremely wide, dark blue-green margins. The nearly round, heavily corrugated leaves are notably thick and deeply furrowed, with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces.
In the Garden
'Thunderbolt' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height and 50 inches (127.0 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-green hostas, where the margin color remains most intense. The bold leaf texture and substantial size make it suitable as a specimen or accent in mixed shade borders, paired with ferns, heucheras, or fine-textured groundcovers.
Care Notes
Water regularly to establish, then maintain consistent moisture during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as growth emerges; avoid high-nitrogen formulas that may reduce margin contrast. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though the thick, corrugated leaves offer some resistance.
