Overview
Registered in 2007, 'The King' is a large sport of unknown parentage distinguished by its broad, blue-green leaves with wide, cream to creamy white margins. The foliage is broadly ovate with a flat base, lightly cupped and moderately wavy, with a dull upper surface and glaucous bloom underneath.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 36 inches (91.4 cm) and a height of 19 inches (48.3 cm), making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its substantial leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its cool blue-green and white coloration.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'The King' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
