Overview

Registered in 1998 with parentage unknown, 'The Hulk' is a giant variegated hosta cultivar distinguished by its exceptionally large leaves—18 inches (45.7 cm) long and 15 inches (38.1 cm) wide—with medium green flat margins and a slightly shiny surface on both sides. The leaves are cordate at the base and bear 15 to 18 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a fast-growing, mound-like clump reaching 78 inches (198.1 cm) in diameter and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in height, with scapes rising 58 to 60 inches (147.3 to 152.4 cm). It is best suited to partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its substantial size makes it appropriate for use as a specimen or background plant in woodland gardens and large borders. Companion plants should be shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns or astilbes that contrast in texture and do not compete for space.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'The Hulk' is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
