Overview

Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'So Sweet', 'Sweetness' is a small-sized variegated cultivar distinguished by its medium green leaves with flat, cream to white margins. The ovate leaves, measuring 7.75 inches (19.7 cm) long by 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) wide, are moderately wavy and lightly corrugated, with a slightly shiny surface on both sides.

In the Garden

'Sweetness' forms a dense, fast-growing mound reaching 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height and 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders or as a groundcover in partial to full shade. Its compact habit pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other small perennials, and its moderate size allows for container cultivation. The green scapes rise 30 to 36 inches (76.2 to 91.4 cm) above the foliage, bearing lavender flowers typical of the species.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Sweetness' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and employ barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
