Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'August Moon', 'Sun Power' was introduced by Paul Aden in 1986. This cultivar is distinguished by its large, heavily corrugated, golden-yellow leaves that hold their color well into the season, and its tall, near-white flower scapes that rise well above the foliage in midsummer.
In the Garden
'Sun Power' performs best in a site that receives morning sun and afternoon shade, which encourages the brightest yellow leaf coloration while preventing scorch. The leaves are broadly ovate, with prominent veining and a slightly puckered texture, forming a substantial, upright clump that reaches a mature spread of several feet. It pairs effectively with darker-leaved plants such as *Heuchera* 'Palace Purple' or ferns, and its tall, fragrant flowers attract pollinators. The cultivar is suitable for mixed borders, shade gardens, or as a specimen in a large container.
Care Notes
Regular watering is required during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor and color, particularly in sunnier positions. Slugs and deer may cause damage, though the thick, corrugated leaves offer some resistance. 'Sun Power' is hardy in a wide range of temperate climates, and benefits from a light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges.
