Overview
Registered in 2004 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance', 'Sum Upper Crust' is a large cultivar distinguished by its upright, broadly ovate leaves of greenish yellow with unstable streaks of varying shades of yellow and creamy white, bordered by narrow, slightly rippled creamy white margins. The thick, leathery foliage exhibits a glaucous bloom on the underside and a slightly shiny upper surface, with 11 to 12 prominent pairs of veins beneath.
In the Garden
'Sum Upper Crust' reaches a mature height of 25 inches (63.5 cm) and a spread of 30 inches (76.2 cm), forming a substantial, upright clump with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in typical hosta-growing zones, preferring partial to full shade, where its bright, variegated foliage provides contrast against darker-leaved companions such as ferns or heucheras. Its large size and striking upright habit make it suitable as a specimen or accent in shaded borders and woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the thick leaves may still be susceptible to browsing.
