Overview
Registered in 1987 by the American Hosta Society, 'Subcrocea' is a small hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its narrow, lanceolate leaves with green centers and gold margins, combined with small undulations along the leaf edges.
In the Garden
This compact hosta reaches a mature spread of 15 inches (38.1 cm) and a height of 11 inches (27.9 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its gold margins remain most vivid, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or ferns. Its small size and tidy habit also make it an excellent choice for trough gardens or miniature hosta collections.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Subcrocea' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
