Overview
Registered in 2003 by originator G. Sturtevant and registrants P. & J. Ruh, 'Sturtevant' is a giant blue-green hosta of historic provenance, dating to the 1930s. Its most distinctive features are its very large, heavily textured leaves with medium blue-green coloration, dull surfaces, and prominent veining.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound 33 inches (83.8 cm) in diameter and 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. Its large, corrugated leaves with slightly rippled margins and cordate bases make it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. 'Sturtevant' performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with other bold-textured perennials such as ferns and astilbes.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Sturtevant' is susceptible to slug damage and may require protection in areas with high slug or deer pressure.
