Overview
Registered in 2009, *Hosta* 'Stormy Lake' is a large hybrid between *H.* 'Sum & Substance' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Elegans' (pollen parent). This cultivar is visually distinctive for its broad, heavily corrugated blue-green leaves with heavily rippled margins and a slightly shiny upper surface, combined with branching scapes bearing pale lavender flowers.
In the Garden
'Stormy Lake' forms a substantial mound 24 inches (61 cm) tall and 45 inches (114 cm) wide, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and its heavy substance and corrugated texture provide good slug resistance. The large size and bold foliage make it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border, where it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain soil moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, corrugated leaves offer moderate resistance to slug damage, though monitoring may still be needed in wet seasons.
