Overview
Registered in 2005 by P. & J. Ruh, 'Squash Blossom' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its medium blue-green leaves with greenish yellow margins that feature irregular, lighter green indentations along the leaf edge. The broadly ovate, lightly cupped leaves are dull on both surfaces and display moderate corrugation, with 13 vein pairs per leaf.
In the Garden
'Squash Blossom' forms a mound-like clump reaching approximately 24.5 inches (62.2 cm) in diameter and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for blue-green hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
