Overview
Registered in 2012, *Hosta* 'Sprite' is a small-sized cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Hearts and Flowers' with an unknown pollen parent. This cultivar is visually distinctive for its lance-shaped, dark green leaves with pale yellow streaking and gold margins, combined with slightly rippled leaf edges and a dull surface texture on both sides.
In the Garden
'Sprite' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. Its small stature and lance-shaped leaves make it suitable for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, and shade-tolerant groundcovers in partial to full shade conditions typical of hosta-growing zones.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Sprite' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so monitoring and protective measures are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
