Overview

Registered in 1995 by J. & J. Wilkins, this giant hosta cultivar is distinguished by its large, very shiny green leaves with medium gold margins. The foliage is notably glossy on both surfaces, with cordate leaf bases and 14 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

With a mature spread of 50 inches (127 cm) and height of 20 inches (51 cm), 'Spotlight' forms a substantial, semi-upright clump suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial shade. Its moderate growth rate and large, reflective leaves make it effective when paired with finer-textured perennials such as ferns or astilbes. The light green scapes, reaching 36 to 42 inches (91 to 107 cm), carry flowers above the foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug damage and may require protection in damp conditions; deer browsing is also a potential concern in typical hosta-growing zones.
