Overview
Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Splendid Sarah' is a large, mound-forming cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Pin Stripe Sister' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its broad, light green leaves edged with a creamy white margin approximately 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) wide, the margins slightly rippled and the leaf surface dull on both sides.
In the Garden
'Splendid Sarah' reaches a mature spread of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 18 inches (45.7 cm), forming a dense, rounded mound. It thrives in partial to full shade, as is typical for variegated hostas, and performs well in woodland gardens or as a specimen in shaded borders. Its large, broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases and moderate waviness pair effectively with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Splendid Sarah' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and appropriate barriers are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
