Overview
Registered in 2000, 'Spartan Glory' is a giant hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'HB-87-1' (pod parent) and *H. nigrescens* 'Elatior' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its large, blue-green leaves with pure white, slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
'Spartan Glory' forms a substantial mound reaching 27 inches (68.6 cm) in height and 62 inches (157.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its giant size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or in the middle to back of a shaded border. Companion plants such as ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials complement its broad, blue-green foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may cause damage, the thick leaves offer some resistance; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
