Overview

Registered in 1989 by P. Banyai, 'Spartan Gem' is a small hosta with variegated foliage of dark satin green leaves edged in lighter tones. Its leaves are distinguished by several undulations along the margins and six vein pairs, while the scapes emerge a deep burgundy.

In the Garden

This compact cultivar reaches 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and spreads to 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders or rock gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials. Its small stature also makes it a candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it may require protection from slugs and deer in the garden.
