Overview
Registered in 1982 by R. Savory, *Hosta* 'Sparkling Burgundy' is a small-sized variegated cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. 'Ginko Craig'. It is distinguished by olive green leaf margins and a compact, mounded habit, reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter. The leaves measure 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) long and 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide, with five pairs of veins, and the scape rises to 23 inches (58.4 cm) in height.
In the Garden
This small hosta is well-suited for shaded borders, rock gardens, or as a groundcover in partial to full shade. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for container cultivation, where its variegated foliage provides subtle contrast. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small shade perennials that complement its olive green margins.
Care Notes
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. This cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in typical hosta-growing zones.
