Overview
Registered in 2002 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Heart and Soul', 'Soul Brother' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its heavy-substance, heart-shaped leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a lightly wavy outline. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) long by 4 inches (10.2 cm) wide, display a slightly shiny upper and lower surface and are borne on green scapes reaching 22 to 24 inches (55.9 to 61.0 cm) in height.
In the Garden
'Soul Brother' performs best in partial to full shade, where its compact dimensions—10 inches (25.4 cm) tall and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter—make it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Its moderate growth rate and dense, mound-like habit pair well with other small shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*. The cultivar's heavy leaf substance provides good resistance to tattering in exposed sites.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While the heavy substance offers some resistance, standard slug and deer precautions are recommended in typical hosta-growing zones.
