Overview
Registered in 1994, 'Smokerise Frosted Vase' is a large hosta resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Frances Williams' (pod parent) and *H. nigrescens* (pollen parent). The cultivar is distinguished by its semi-upright, vase-shaped habit and green leaves with white margins, combined with a gray-green leaf surface that is dull above and slightly shiny beneath.
In the Garden
This hosta forms a substantial clump reaching 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in height, with scapes rising 20 to 28 inches (50.8 to 71.1 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its upright foliage makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen plant. Pair with ferns or other shade perennials that contrast with its broad, cordate-based leaves.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in garden settings.
