Overview
Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'Silver Bay' is a medium-sized hybrid of *Hosta* 'Silver Frost' and *Hosta* 'Blue Moon'. Its most distinctive features are intensely blue-green, cordate leaves with slightly rippled margins, a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and a compact, mound-like habit.
In the Garden
'Silver Bay' forms a dense, symmetrical mound 13 inches (33 cm) tall and 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous foliage retains its color. Its medium size makes it suitable for the middle of a border, as a groundcover under deciduous trees, or in large containers. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed.
