Overview
Registered in 1986 by F. Williams, E. Fisher, and the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Silver Award' is a giant-sized cultivar of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive feature is the broad blue-green leaf with a silver-blue margin, a combination that gives the plant a cool, metallic appearance uncommon among large hostas.
In the Garden
'Silver Award' reaches a mature spread of 46 inches (117 cm) and a height of 27 inches (69 cm), making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in partial to full shade. Its substantial leaves, measuring 13.75 inches (35 cm) long and 12.25 inches (31 cm) wide, pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture. The plant performs best in well-drained, humus-rich soil and is not suited for container cultivation due to its size.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage can be significant; monitor for pests and use barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
