Overview
Registered in 1997 by G. Rasmussen, 'Silent Witness' is a small hosta distinguished by its medium green leaves with wide, light green, flat margins. The variegation pattern is consistent, with the leaf center darker than the margin, and the foliage exhibits a slight sheen on the upper surface with a very shiny underside.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and is well-suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings due to its small stature. Companion plants include other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or miniature sedges.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor foliage and take protective measures if necessary.
