Overview
Registered in 2005 by an unknown breeder, 'Sharp Dressed Man' is a medium-sized hosta notable for its unusual leaf morphology: a pure white center bordered by medium green, flat margins, with a high vein count of 11 to 12 pairs per leaf. The leaves are ovate with a cordate base, moderately folded, and exhibit a dull upper surface with a glaucous bloom beneath; the white center is reported to resist melting out in typical garden conditions.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the white leaf centers remain stable without scorching. The substantial leaf substance and upright scapes (20 to 22 inches, or 50.8 to 55.9 cm) make it suitable for mid-border positions, paired with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents are advisable, as both pests may target the foliage.
