Overview
Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Shady Lover' is a small, mound-forming sport derived from a splashed seedling of unknown parentage. It is visually defined by its broadly ovate, medium green leaves with creamy white margins that range from 0.25 to 0.5 inches (0.6 to 1.3 cm) wide, combined with a very shiny upper surface and moderate corrugation.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of 20 inches (50.8 cm) and height of 8 inches (20.3 cm), 'Shady Lover' forms a compact, mound-like clump suitable for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant groundcovers. Its moderate growth rate and tidy habit make it a reliable filler in small garden spaces.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
