Overview

Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Shadow Wood Ruffles' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its intensely wavy, broadly ovate to nearly round leaves with golden yellow, heavily rippled margins and dark green centers. The leaf blades are moderately cupped, twisted, and folded, with a dull upper surface and slightly shiny underside, creating a pronounced undulating appearance on a bright yellow-edged leaf.

In the Garden

This slow-growing hosta forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of shade borders or as an edging plant. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain vibrant without scorching, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its small stature and attractive foliage also make it a candidate for container cultivation in typical hosta-growing zones.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Monitor for slug and deer damage, which can disfigure the distinctive wavy foliage.
