Overview
Registered in 1986 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Flamboyant', 'Shade Fanfare' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its green leaves with white margins. The foliage measures 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) long and 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, with six pairs of veins, and the white marginal variegation provides a crisp contrast against the darker green center.
In the Garden
'Shade Fanfare' forms a dense mound reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the white margins remain stable without scorching. This cultivar works well as a groundcover in shaded borders or as an edging plant, and its medium size suits it for mixed perennial beds. Companion plants include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Shade Fanfare' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
