Overview
Registered in 2001 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Torchlight', 'Searchlight' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its dark green leaves with unstable white streaking margins. The broadly ovate foliage, measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, exhibits a slightly shiny upper surface and a lightly flat texture with a cordate base.
In the Garden
Reaching 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and 17 inches (43.2 cm) in diameter, 'Searchlight' performs best in partial to full shade, where its variegated margins remain most stable. The grayish-green scapes rise 13 to 15 inches (33.0 to 38.1 cm) above the foliage, making this cultivar suitable for the middle to front of shaded borders or woodland gardens. Its medium size allows pairing with ferns, *Heuchera*, or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Searchlight' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitoring and protective measures may be required in areas where these pests are prevalent.
