Overview
Registered in 2001 by M. Seaver, *Hosta* 'Sea Current' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Sea Frolic' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. Its most distinctive feature is the heavily rippled margin edge, which is very tight and pronounced, combined with deep veins and a slightly puckered center on broadly ovate, medium green leaves with a slight shine on both surfaces.
In the Garden
'Hosta' Sea Current forms a mound-like clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its medium green, heavily rippled foliage. Its compact size and moderate spread make it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded rock gardens, though its dimensions are too large for most containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, especially in warmer climates, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so monitoring and protective measures are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
