Overview
Registered in 2004, 'Sandhill Crane' is a small hosta derived from a self-pollinated F-2 seedling of *Hosta longissima* from Japan. The cultivar is distinguished by its extremely upright, fast-growing habit and narrow, lance-shaped leaves of medium green with creamy white, flat margins.
In the Garden
At maturity, 'Sandhill Crane' forms a clump 26 inches (66 cm) in diameter and 18 inches (46 cm) tall, with scapes reaching 30 to 34 inches (76–86 cm). Its upright, narrow foliage makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant in partial to full shade. It pairs well with small ferns, *Heuchera*, or other compact shade perennials, and is appropriate for container culture given its small size.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. While typical hosta-growing zones apply, the narrow leaves may be less appealing to deer and slugs than broader-leaved cultivars, though standard precautions are advisable in high-pressure areas.
