Overview

Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Sanctuary' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage, with *H. 'Urajiro Hachijo'* as its pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green, broadly ovate leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, slightly rippled margins, and a symmetrical, mound-like habit.

In the Garden

'Sanctuary' forms a dense mound 20 inches (50.8 cm) tall and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and is well-suited for mid-border positions, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds. Its substantial blue foliage pairs effectively with finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the glaucous leaves may be attractive to these pests.
