Overview
Registered in 1999, 'Royal Bells' is a medium-sized hosta resulting from complex parentage involving *H. kikutii* crossed with both 'Beatrice' and 'August Moon'. It is visually distinctive for its upright habit, medium green leaves with heavily rippled golden yellow margins, and maroon coloration on the upper half of the scape.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
