Overview

Registered in 2013, 'Rough Knight' is a large blue-green hosta of open-pollinated parentage from *Hosta* 'King of Spades'. Its most distinctive features are the nearly round, heavily corrugated leaves with a pronounced glaucous bloom on both surfaces, all arising from a central point to form a dense, mound-like habit.

In the Garden

'Rough Knight' reaches approximately 36 inches (91 cm) in diameter and 10 inches (25 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. The substantial, cupped leaves—8.5 inches long by 8 inches wide—create a bold textural presence in part to full shade. Its blue-green coloration pairs well with golden or chartreuse-foliaged companions such as *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' or *Carex elata* 'Aurea'. The low, compact mound makes it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a large container.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the thick, corrugated leaves may still be palatable to these pests in typical hosta-growing zones.
