Overview

Registered in 2000 by Rosedale Gardens, *Hosta* 'Rosedale Soup Bowl' is a large, variegated cultivar derived from the cross of *H.* 'RD-BS' (pod parent) and *H.* 'RD-07' (pollen parent). Its most distinctive feature is the combination of a dark green leaf margin with a lighter, often chartreuse to yellow-green center, creating a strong contrast on broadly ovate, heavily textured leaves.

In the Garden

With leaves reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in both length and width, this cultivar forms a substantial mound suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. The large, cupped foliage pairs well with fine-textured companions such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Carex*, and its robust size makes it less suited for container culture. It performs best in typical hosta-growing zones with consistent moisture and organic-rich soil.

Care Notes

Provide regular water during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be warranted in areas with high pest pressure.
