Overview
Registered in 1999, 'Rosedale Golden Fleece' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown breeder origin. It is visually distinctive for its green leaves with golden yellow margins, a color pattern produced from the cross of two unnamed seedlings, H. 'RD-BSS-92' (pod parent) and H. 'RD-BS-1' (pollen parent).
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature size typical of large hostas, with leaves measuring 9 inches (22.9 cm) both in length and width. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is standard for gold-margined hostas, which may scorch in excessive sun. Its substantial leaf size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders, where it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. It is not well suited to container culture due to its large mature dimensions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
