Overview
Registered in 2015 by R. Goodenough and M. Gilligan, *Hosta* 'Rix Pix' is a medium-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Designer Genes' and *Hosta* 'Mr Jack'. It is visually distinctive for its low, mound-like habit and green leaves with flat yellow margins, combined with reddish lower petioles and stems.
In the Garden
'Rix Pix' reaches approximately 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter and only 4 inches (10.2 cm) in height, with a slow growth rate. Its low, spreading form makes it suitable for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees. The reddish scapes and petiole bases provide subtle color contrast against the green-and-gold foliage. It performs best in typical hosta-growing zones with partial to full shade.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protection from deer and slugs may be necessary in garden settings.
