Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, 'Richmond Blue' is a giant sport of *Hosta* 'Great Expectations'. It is distinguished by its large, deeply corrugated, broadly ovate leaves with blue-green coloration, a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and slightly rippled margins.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound, reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height and 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or accent in woodland borders and shade gardens, where it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. It is not recommended for container cultivation due to its giant stature.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While blue-leaved hostas are generally less palatable to slugs and deer than green or gold varieties, monitoring and control measures may still be necessary in high-pressure areas.
